Israeli army calls for boycott of supermodel Bar Refaeli

Israeli model Bar Refaeli has been targeted by her country's army for her refusal to serve and for applying for a non-resident status in her native Israel so she can pay less tax.

Refaeli, 24, has come under the attack of a senior officer with the Israel Defense Forces, who has called for a boycott of products advertised by her.

"I can't take on Bar Refaeli, but you can," said Major General Avi Zamir to students in Herzliya near Tel Aviv.

Serving in the military is considered a high priority in Israel, and with a third of the eligible population estimated to avoid national service, it has left the country's military leadership worried.

Refaeli had escaped serving in the army when she married a family friend, as married women are exempted from military service.

But she soon divorced and within a year she was dating 'Titanic' star Leonardo DiCaprio.

Now the model has once again become the centre of a controversy after it was revealed that she was setting up an offshore company in order to reduce the amount of tax she would pay in Israel.

Refaeli's mother has hit back at the public criticism.

Media needs to be more responsible: A.R. Rahman

Referring to the news reports of recent attacks on Indians in Australia, music maestro A.R. Rahman, who is in Sydney for a free concert to bridge relations between India and Australia, says the media should act responsibly.
"We need more responsible media. Media's a great tool, but it can also be misused and provoke people and just one wrong can kill thousands of people. And that's happened in the past and we need to be extremely careful and strict about what we are - the truth," said Rahman at a press conference in Sydney, Thursday.
"I was speaking to a lot of people, they were saying that some of them are racial killings, some of them are not. But everything gets painted in the same colour and we have to be very careful on that," he added.
Rahman's remarks came amid a string of attacks on Indians and Indian symbols in the country, the latest being a fire at a Melbourne gurdwara.
The Indian Oscar winner is slated to perform at the Parramatta Park as part of the Festival of Sydney, Saturday and he says it is a step forward to bridge the gaps.
"This country is re-affirming the friendship and I hope that this concert brings that and I'm sure it will, hopefully," said the 44-year-old.
"Australia has taken this first step, they called me. I think any art form, whether it's a movie or whether it's a concert, you see all kinds of people in one," he added.
Rahman, who is known internationally for composing the song "Jai Ho" from Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire", also gave safety tips to people.
"Regarding safety, I would advise not to go anywhere at night, especially in shady places where there are a lot of drug addicts and alcoholics and be careful, because they are going to be the main reason for any trouble in the future," he said.

Amitabh's Bomb, "I can barely act, how can I direct:?"

He is one of India’s best known actors. But a modest Amitabh Bachchan says he only knows how to ‘prepare, perform and push off’ and is not capable of donning the director’s hat!
‘I am often asked when I would direct a film and my standard answer to that has always been that I can barely act, where am I going to get the acumen to direct,’ Amitabh posted on his blog www.bigb.bigadda.com.

‘To me it (direction) has been an enormous task that can only be fulfilled by those that have passion and desire to want to tell a story. I guess sometime or the other we have all wanted to do that - to narrate a credible story. But to convert it into film is indeed another matter,’ he added.

The 67-year-old says he is content with his acting career.

‘I am most happy when I do not have to worry about the aspects of film making (other) than with those connected to a performance. Prepare, perform, and push off! It may sound too selfish a thought, but really what else could I ever contribute to it,’ he posted.

Amitabh feels that though it’s a major task to direct a film, directors are not often given their due credit.

‘Directing a film is an enormous task. Every aspect of it has to be understood and envisioned before any serious claim can be made on this. Which is why I think the respect and admiration and acclaim that should have rightfully been the director’s is sometimes destroyed by a complete misunderstanding of what his or her contribution, in the field of direction is,’ he added.

The actor, who turned film producer in 1996, will be seen next in Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Rann’ and in Leena Yadav’s ‘Teen Patti’.
